- Service Duration: Recruits, known as Agniveers, will serve for a period of four years.
- Post-Service Options: After four years, based on performance, around 25% of the Agniveers will be enrolled in the regular cadre of the Armed Forces, with an extension of up to 15 years.
- Financial Package: Agniveers receive a composite monthly package, which includes salary and risk and hardship allowances.
- First Year: ₹30,000 per month.
- Second Year: ₹33,000 per month.
- Third Year: ₹36,500 per month.
- Fourth Year: ₹40,000 per month.
- Seva Nidhi Package: At the end of the four-year tenure, each Agniveer will receive a one-time ‘Seva Nidhi’ package, which is approximately ₹11.71 lakh. This includes their own contribution (30% of monthly emoluments) along with a matching contribution from the government, and interest on the accumulated amount.
- Insurance: Agniveers will be provided with a non-contributory life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh during their service period.
- Skill Development: The scheme includes a skill certificate, which would be beneficial for post-service job opportunities.

- Selection: Selection is based on a combination of physical fitness tests, written examinations, and medical tests.
Advantages
- Skill Acquisition: Agniveers gain military training, discipline, and skills that can be transferred to civilian jobs.
- Financial Savings: The scheme is economically beneficial for the government, reducing the pension burden due to the shorter service period.
- Modernization: A younger force ensures a more dynamic and technologically adept military.
Challenges
- Job Security: Only 25% of Agniveers will be retained, raising concerns about the future of the remaining 75% post-service.
- Training: Shorter service periods might limit the depth of training and experience gained.
Implementation Timeline
- Announcement: The scheme was announced in June 2022.
- Recruitment Cycles: Regular recruitment cycles are planned to induct new Agniveers annually.
Post-Service Opportunities
- Education: Agniveers can pursue further education with the skills and financial support they receive.
- Employment: The skill certificate and experience make Agniveers attractive candidates for various civilian jobs, including in the security sector and other industries.
Feedback and Criticism
The scheme has received mixed reactions:
- Support: Many view it as a revolutionary step towards modernizing the military and providing youth employment.
- Criticism: Concerns have been raised regarding the short service period, job security after the tenure, and the potential impact on military professionalism.
Conclusion
The Agnipath Scheme represents a significant shift in the Indian Armed Forces’ recruitment strategy, aiming to modernize the forces while providing youth with opportunities for service and skill development. Its success will depend on effective implementation and addressing the challenges related to post-service employment and training quality.
